Tips to protect yourselves from Advanced Persistent threats (APT)

APT is one of the most dangerous of threats.  If they get into a system or network they establish a foothold and a base from where they latch onto other areas within the network.  Once in, the gains are long-term for the hackers.

Through this type of exploitation, the intruders get information from company websites, or social media to begin their attacks.  They start phishing to individuals by sending attachments via emails and enticing a person into downloading their information, which in reality is malware.  From one such successful attempt, their move on to others is quite easy.  The real danger lies in not recognizing these attacks.  The hacker’s enormous damage is from silent accumulation of data over several years.  Integrated systems make it awfully easy to spread quickly.

How to prevent an APT attack?
Any solution should have a combination of the following basics:

  • Anti-virus
  • Anti-malware
  • Patch management
  • Control over flow of data
  • End Point Security
  • Scanning
  • Logging
  • Encryption of data
